St. Louis, Mo., March 10, 2017 — Washington University in St. Louis senior outfielders Hannah Mehrle and Janet Taylor were selected to the 2017 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) watch list for the 2017 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division III National Player of the Year award.
The list is a collaborative effort between the NFCA's Division III Head Coaches and All-America committees. The list will subsequently be cut to 25 and 10, before the winner is chosen.
Mehrle, a second-team NFCA All-America selection a year ago, started all 47 games in left field and batted a conference-best .487 with four home runs and 38 RBIs. She set the WashU single-season school record with 74 hits, and tied the school record with seven triples. Mehrle led the conference in five categories: hits, batting average, on-base percentage (.549), triples and total bases (110). She hit safely in 42 of 47 games, and was tops on the team with 20 multi-hit games.
Taylor, a first-team all-Region and all-UAA honoree in 2016, started all 47 games in center field and batted .421 with a team-best five home runs and 42 RBIs. She also tied the WashU single-season record with 22 walks. Taylor was second in the UAA in on-base percentage (.515) and third in walks, triples (3), hits (59) and RBIs. She hit safely in 40 of 47 games, and had a career-long 21-game hitting streak during the season.
