Caldwell and Mehrle Lead No. 19 Softball Past No. 17 Augustana 3-2 at Mizuno Invitational
St. Louis, Mo., March 23, 2014 – Junior Sydney Caldwell and freshman Hannah Mehrle combined to drive in all three runs to lead the No. 19-ranked Washington University in St. Louis softball team to a 3-2 win over No. 17 Augustana College in the final game of the Mizuno Invitational Sunday afternoon at the WU Softball Field. WUSTL suffered a 4-3 loss to No. 12 Coe College in the first game Sunday.
Caldwell was 2-for-2 with a home run, RBI, walk and two runs scored against Augustana, while Mehrle was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Washington U. had nine hits in the game two victory.

Coe (12-2) scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth of game one after Danielle Schlotterbeck singled to right scoring Brianna Gardner. The Bears answered back with a run in the fifth after a solo home run by Mehrle. The home run for Mehrle was the first of her career.
The Kohawks took advantage of an error by Washington U. in the sixth to push across two unearned runs. A passed ball allowed the first run of the inning to score, and then a double down the left field line by Schlotterbeck made it 3-1.
Washington U. answered back in the bottom of the sixth with two runs on three hits and took advantage of a Kohawk error. Juniors Adrienne White and Alyssa Wilson singled with one out, and then senior Kelsey Neal singled to left scoring White. Schlotterbeck let the ball go through her legs and rolled to the fence, which allowed Wilson to score from first to tie the game at 3-3.
With one out in the seventh, Taylor Riedl hit a home run over the right field fence off sophomore pitcher Annie Pitkin to make it 4-3. Pitkin (6-5) suffered her third-straight one-run loss allowing four hits, four runs (two earned) and 12 strikeouts. White was 2-for-4 at the plate for Washington U., who was limited to five hits in the loss.

The Bears fell behind for the fourth-straight game as Augustana scored a pair of runs on three hits in the fourth of WUSTL starter Kelsey Neal. Despite the 2-0 deficit, Washington U. had four hits through the first four innings of play.
Caldwell cut the deficit in half with a solo home run to lead off the fifth to make it 2-1. The home run for Caldwell was her first of the season and third of her career. Freshman Kenzie James and White followed with back-to-back singles, and then Mehrle cleared the bases with a two-RBI single to left to regain the 3-2 advantage.
Neal (4-1) picked up the win on the mound tossing a complete game allowing nine hits and two earned runs. James (2-for-3) and White (2-for-4, run scored) also had multi-hit games for the Bears.
Washington U. (13-6) closes out a six game home stand with a doubleheader against DePauw University Wednesday, March 26. Game one is set to begin at 4 p.m.
BEAR NOTEBOOK: The Bears win over Augustana was the first this season when not scoring first (1-6 record) … White has hit safely in all 19 games this season and 20 straight dating back to last season … Mehrle hit .625 (5-for-8) with three RBIs in the four games, while White hit .429 (6-for-14) with two runs scored … Washington U. hit .186 (19-for-102) as team in the Mizuno Invitational and the pitching staff combined for a 1.45 earned run average.
