No. 19 Washington U. Softball Drops Pair of One-Run Games at Mizuno Invitational

St. Louis, Mo., March 22, 2014 – The No. 19-ranked Washington University in St. Louis softball team dropped a pair of one-run games at the Mizuno Invitational Saturday afternoon at the WU Softball Field in St. Louis.

Washington U. suffered a 2-1 loss to No. 17 Augustana College in game one, and then dropped a 1-0 decision in eight innings to Illinois Wesleyan University in the second game. The Bears had a combined six hits in the two losses.

#17 Augustana 2, #19 Washington U. 1
It was a pitchers dual between Washington U. sophomore Annie Pitkin and Augustana senior Sarah Hintz in game one. Pitkin gave up one hit through the first three innings, but got in some trouble in the fourth. Jenna Teson tripled to center with one out to get the rally started, and then Krista Watson sent the next pitch from Pitkin over the fence for a two-run homerun to make it 2-0.

The Bears pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh with two outs after freshman Hannah Mehrle reached on an error than brought home freshman Janet Taylor. Pitkin took the loss allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out seven. Washington U. was limited to a season-low two hits in the loss.

Illinois Wesleyan 1, #19 Washington U. 0 (eight innings)
With senior pitcher Kelsey Neal in the circle in game two, Illinois Wesleyan threated in its first at-bat after giving up a double and a single. Neal got out of the jam though after Mehrle crashed into the right-field wall and made the catch robbing Sarah Platt from a two-RBI double.

Washington U. struggled at the plate the entire game and got a runner to second base just twice. The Titans score their only run of the game off Pitkin after a two-out wild pitch in the eighth. Neal got the no-decision pitching 5 1/3 innings allowing five hits, while Pitkin (6-4) took the loss allowing one hit and one unearned run in 2 2/3 innings pitched. Mehrle had two of the four hits for Washington U. in the loss.

Washington U. (12-5) closes out play at the 2014 Mizuno Invitational with a pair of games Sunday against No. 12 Coe College at 10 a.m. and No. 17 Augustana at 2 p.m.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: Washington U. is 0-5 when their opponent scores first … Junior Adrienne White has hit safely in all 17 games this season.
