Hillis Advances to ITA Regional Championship Match

St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 30, 2018 – Sophomore Ethan Hillis of the Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team picked up a pair of straight set victories to advance to the championship match of the 2018 ITA Division III Men's Central Regional held at Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis.

Hillis, a transfer from Amherst College at the No. 8 seed, ousted No. 20 seed Joshua Xu of the University of Chicago 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals and top-seed Jake Zalenski of Kenyon College 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals. 

Hills takes on Jeremy Yuan of Chicago in the finals Monday at 10 a.m.

Junior Bernardo Neves, the No. 2 seed, fell to Yuan 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. 

In the University Tennis Rating (UTR) singles draws, WashU captured three of the four draws: freshman Luke Smith (A), sophomore David Buchinsky (B) and Jessie Korovin (C). 

Smith defeated Arthur Chau of Chicago 7-5, 6-4, Buchinsky won by a walkover over Justin Folkert of Hope College, and Korovin quickly dispatched Austin Burkhart of Greenville University 6-0, 6-1.
