St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 28, 2018 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team had a successful opening day at the 2018 ITA Division III Men's Central Regional Friday in St. Louis.
WashU is hosting the Central Region for the fourth time in the last 13 years. Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park served as the main site, while WashU's Tao Tennis Center and Westminster Christian Academy also hosted tournament play.
WashU had eight student-athletes win a pair of matches in the main draw in singles, including five ranked players who advanced to the round of 32.
Junior Bernardo Neves (No. 2), sophomore Ethan Hillis (No. 8), sophomore Benjamin van der Sman (No. 10), sophomore Daniel Li (No. 14) and junior J.J. Kroot (No. 30) all posted two victories on day one.
Three unranked players in senior Konrad Kozlowski and freshmen Sam Komis and Luke McClelland also advanced to the round of 32 with upset victories. Kozlowski ousted No. 17 seed Stephen Gruppuso of Oberlin College 6-2, 6-0, Komis defeated No. 32 seed Mitchell Thai 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 of Denison, while McClelland had the biggest upset of day one with a 0-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over No. 4 seed Austin Diehl of Kenyon College.
In doubles, WashU had three teams advance to the round of 16. The No. 3 seeded team of Kozlowski and van der Sman posted a pair of victories, while No. 14 seed of senior Radha Vishnubhotla and Nevis dropped just three games.
Komis and McClelland also advanced to the round of 16 in doubles, ousting No. 10 seed Greg Frauenheim and Bryce McClanahan of DePauw University 8-3 in the round of 32.
