Neves Named Men’s Tennis Elite 90 Award Winner

Claremont, Calif., May 20, 2018 – Washington University in St. Louis sophomore Bernardo Neves was the recipient of the Elite 90 Award for the 2018 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship, as announced Sunday night at the Championship Banquet in Claremont, Calif.

Neves is the third WashU men's tennis student-athlete to earn the award joining Isaac Stein (2010) and Tim Noack (2013). He is the seventh student-athlete in school history to earn the Elite 90 Award. WashU has an NCAA Division III leading 10 selections since the program's inception in 2009-10.

The Elite 90, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 90 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's 90 championships.

Neves has a 50-14 overall record in 2017-18 while playing No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles for the Bears. He has a 28-4 mark in singles, and is ranked No. 6 in the Central Region. Neves was named the 2018 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Player to Watch.

He was a first-team all-University Athletic Association (UAA) selection at No. 2 singles and a member of the UAA All-Tournament Team.

A 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District and Academic all-UAA selection, Neves has a 3.99 grade point average while majoring in mechanical engineering and computer science.

Eligible student-athletes for the Elite 90 Award are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years with their school. They must be an active member of the team, traveling and a designated member of the squad size at the championship. The number of credits completed breaks all ties.
