No. 2 Men’s Tennis to Host NCAA Central Regional May 9-11
St. Louis, Mo., May 5, 2014 — The No. 2-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team will host the Central Regional of the 2014 NCAA Division III Championship on Friday-Sunday, May 9-11, at the Tao Tennis Center. This marks the sixth time in the last seven seasons Washington U. has hosted regional play.
The Bears, who are headed to the NCAA Tournament for the 15th-straight season, received an automatic bid after winning their second-straight University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship with a 7-2 win over No. 9 Carnegie Mellon University April 26 in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Coe College (24-7) and Earlham College (16-6) will meet Friday in the first round at 9 a.m., with the winner taking on host Washington U. Saturday at 9 a.m.. Friday's other first-round match at Noon features Sewanee: University of the South (14-6) and Elmhurst College (16-4), with the winner taking on No. 13 Whitman College (19-4) Saturday at 9 a.m. The Regional Championship is set for Sunday at Noon
Washington University is making its 19th NCAA appearance, and 16th as a Division III institution. The Bears have advanced to the quarterfinals 10 times in school history – 1986, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 – and won the 2008 NCAA Division III National Championship. Washington U. has an overall record of 32-19 (.627) in 15 trips to the NCAA Division III tournament, and is seeking its seventh-straight Final Four appearance.
Washington U. is one of four UAA squads selected for the NCAA Championship. No. 6 Emory received an at-large bid and will play at Washington & Lee University in Arlington, Va., while No. 5 Carnegie Mellon University and No. 9 Case Western Reserve University also received at-large bids and will play on the CMU campus in Pittsburgh.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges will host the NCAA Division III Team Championship Saturday-Monday, May 19-21, at Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, Calif. The NCAA Individual Championships are scheduled for Tuesday-Thursday, May 22-24. Student-athletes selected to compete in the individual championships will be announced Wednesday, May 7.
