Bears Vault to No. 1 in ITA Rankings For Third Time in School History


St. Louis, Mo., March 4, 2014 – Following its 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Indoor Team Championship, the Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team has vaulted to No. 1 in the ITA Division III National Team Rankings.

Washington U. is ranked No. 1 for the third time in school history. The Bears picked up the top spot in the June 4, 2008, rankings after winning the NCAA Division III National Championship and also on May 1, 2009.

Defending national champion Williams College, who opened the season as the top-ranked team, fell to No. 2 after remaining idle. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, Amherst College and Johns Hopkins University rounded out the top five.

Washington U. (6-1) opens a three-match Spring Break trip to California against the University of Rochester Monday, March 10, at 9 a.m. (PT). The Bears also take on No. 11 Bowdoin University (March 11) and No. 19 Carnegie Mellon University (March 14) on the West Coast.
