Washington U. Men’s Tennis Competes at Purdue Fall Invitational
West Lafayette, Ind., September 22, 2013– The Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team competed at the 2013 Purdue University Fall Invitational held Friday-Sunday, September 20-22, in West Lafayette, Ind.
The three-day event consisted of five singles and two doubles draws from 20 collegiate squads – 16 from NCAA Division I, three from NCAA Division III (Chicago, Case Western Reserve, Washington U.) and one junior college (Vincennes).
Sophomore Josh Cogan highlighted singles play by winning the consolation championship of the D singles flight. Cogan won four straight matches in the back draw after suffering a 6-3, 6-3 defeat to Michael Savaglio of Valparaiso University in the opening round. He ousted Akshay Verman of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis 7-5, 6-0 in the championship match.
Freshman John Carswell won the first two singles matches in the front draw of the B singles flight before falling to No. 2 seed Mateus Silva of Purdue 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Carswell defeated Amaury Derognat of Louisville University 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 in the opening round and upset No. 5 seed Sten Leusink of DePaul University 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in the second round. Sophomore Tyler Kratky also posted a 2-2 record in the Flight C singles draw.
Carswell and Cogan highlighted doubles play with an appearance in the quarterfinals of the A Doubles Draw after posting an 8-6 win over Woods/Weldon of Butler University (8-5) in the first round and Cahn/Shideler (8-6) of Western Michigan University in round two.
Washington U. returns to action at the 2013 USTA/ITA Division III Central Regional Friday-Monday, Sept. 27-30, at Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Mich.
