Kalamazoo, Mich., Sept. 29, 2013 – Freshman Jeremy Bush and junior Ross Putterman of the Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team won the 2013 USTA/ITA Central Region Doubles Championship with a 5-7, 6-4, 10-8 victory over No. 8 seed Sven Kranz and Deepak Sabada of the University of Chicago Sunday in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The No. 7 seed in the 64-team doubles draw, Bush and Putterman won six matches in three days to claim the doubles championship. The duo defeated three ranked teams, including a walkover over the top-seeded team of Ryan Kreis and Josh Ward of Wheaton College (Ill.) in the semifinals.
"We started the tournament slow this week but played better doubles each match, and put it all together at the right time, Putterman said. "We were really excited how the team came out and played this weekend and have a ton of confidence moving forward into the spring with this young team. This was a huge confidence booster."
Bush and Putterman became the fifth doubles team in head coach Roger Follmer's 13 seasons on the Danforth Campus to win a regional doubles championship. Neil Kenner and Ari Rosenthal won in 2002, Charlie Cutler and Chris Hoeland captured back-to-back titles in 2007 and 2008, while Isaac Stein and Max Woods won the 2009 regional doubles title.
The doubles team of freshman John Carswell and sophomore Josh Cogan also had a nice showing in doubles, falling in the semifinals to Kranz and Sabada 9-8 (7-3). The duo upset No. 2 seed Patrick Cole and Tyler Triolo of Allegheny College 8-2 in the round of 16, before taking down No. 6 seed Eric Klawitter and CJ Krimbill of Case Western Reserve University 8-6 in the quarterfinals.
Washington U. advanced three underclassmen into the quarterfinals in singles – Bush, Carswell and sophomore Tyler Kratky. Bush ousted Carswell in the quarterfinals 6-1, 7-6 (7-4), before dropping a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 decision to No. 21 seed Sam Geier of Kenyon College in the semifinals.
Bush took down No. 5 seed Alex Harbert of Elmhurst College 6-1, 6-3 in the round of 32, and followed with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) victory over No. 27 seed John Carswell in the round of 16. Carswell posted a marathon victory over No. 4 seed CJ Krimbill 6-7 (7-1), 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) in the round of 16 before falling to his teammate in the next round.
Kratky, the No. 22 seed, was equally impressive posting wins over No. 12 seed Caleb Knust of Trine University 6-0, 6-4 in the round of 32 and No. 6 seed Ross Putterman 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 in the round of 16. His run came to end with a 7-5, 6-3 loss to No. 3 seed Deepak Sabada in the quarterfinals. Sabada will take on Geier in the singles finals Monday at 9 a.m. (ET).
Freshman Collier Bouchillon and Kai Skallerud won the Kalamazoo College Doubles Championship with an 8-6 victory over Nick Makowiecki and Matt Santen of DePauw University. The duo lost just 17 games in five matches en route to the title.
Senior Eric Zishka advanced to the semifinals in the Kalamazoo College Singles Championship with four wins before dropping a 6-7 (8-6), 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (8-6) decision to Louie Stuerke of Case Western Reserve University.
Bush and Putterman advance to the 2013 USTA/ITA Small College Championships, held Thursday-Sunday, Oct. 10-13, at the Three Oaks Tennis Center in Fort Myers, Fla.
