Men’s Soccer Drops Season Opener to Ohio Wesleyan

Wheaton, Ill., August 31, 2018 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to Ohio Wesleyan University in the 2018 season opener Friday at the Bob Baptista Invitational in Wheaton, Ill.

Antonio Romanelli scored the game-winner for Ohio Wesleyan in the 84thminute despite playing short-handed on a shot from 10-yards out.

"We started nervous and then settled into the game. Ohio Wesleyan is a solid team and created some problems for us," said head coach Joe Clarke. "It came down to one mistake and they took advantage of it. That is soccer. 

WashU outshot Ohio Wesleyan 16-9, and had an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. Junior transfer Connor Mathes (0-1) made three saves in his first start in goal.

Sophomore Sean Connors led the Bears with four shots, including two on net.

Ohio Wesleyan goalkeeper J.P. Baughman made eight saves in the win, including three in the final 2:39 to preserve the win.

WashU plays Benedictine University (Ill.) on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 4:30 p.m. The Eagles are reclassifying to NCAA Division II in 2019.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the series with OWU 5-4, and the teams met for the first time since 2011 … The teams combined for five cards, including a red card by OWU in the 64thminute … The Bears are 16-4-2 in season openers under Clarke.
