BEAR HEADLINES – The No. 10-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team opens up University Athletic Association (UAA) play against the University of Chicago (4-7) on Saturday, Jan. 6. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at the WU Field House. The Bears wrapped up non-conference play with a 9-2 record.
SANDERS JOINS 1,000-POINT CLUB – Senior forward Andrew Sanders scored 21 points in a 72-57 loss to No. 3 Augustana (Ill.) on Dec. 29 and became the 24th player in school history to score 1,000 career points. Sanders has scored 1,022 points in 71 career games, for an average of 14.4 per game.
SCOUTING CHICAGO – The Maroons have lost four of their last five contests, and are 0-5 away from home this season. Chicago is averaging 71.9 points per game, and leads the conference in three-pointers made per game (11.0), three-point field-goal percentage defense (.303) and fewest turnovers per game (12.2). The Maroons have struggled shooting the ball, ranking seventh in the league in free-throw percentage (.618) and last in field-goal percentage (.391).
Senior guard Jake Fenlon (16.6), senior forward Collin Barthel (11.6) and junior guard Noah Karras (10.7) average in double figures for Chicago. Fenlon leads the UAA in threes made (47), while sophomore guard Jordan Baum is tops in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.7).
Head coach Mike McGrath is in his 19th season as head coach of the Maroons. McGrath is the winningest coach in school history with an overall record of 274-194 (.585). A three-time University Athletic Association (UAA) Coach of the Year, he has guided UChicago to four NCAA appearances and four UAA titles.
SERIES NOTES – WashU leads the all-time series with Chicago, 50-21, but the Bears had their three-game win streak snapped with an 81-74 defeat on Feb. 25, 2017 in St. Louis.
UAA OPENERS – The Bears are 20-10 all-time in UAA openers, and snapped a two-game losing streak with a 70-68 victory at Chicago in the conference opener Jan. 7. Clinton Hooks hit a game-winning shot as time expired. This marks the 17th-straight season that WashU has opened conference action against Chicago.
