Football Hosts Centre on Saturday in SAA Opener

St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 13, 2016 – Washington University in St. Louis plays its 2016 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) opener Saturday, Sept. 17, at home against Centre College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Francis Field.

THE SERIES – WashU and Centre are meeting for the 21st time in school history – but for just the fourth time since 1984. The Bears lead the all-time series with Centre, 10-9-1. The teams first met in 1931.

THE COACHES –  Head coach Larry Kindbom (Kalamazoo, 1974) is in his 28th season at WashU, compiling a record of 167-105 (.614). His 167 wins rank him as the all-time winningest coach at WashU. Overall, in 34 seasons, Kindbom is 195-135-1 (.591), and is the fifth-winningest active NCAA Division III head coach.

Centre College head coach Andy Frye (Muskingum, 1981) is in his 28th season at Centre, and 19th as head coach. Frye served as the Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator at Centre prior to being named head coach in 1998. He has posted a 120-63 (.656) overall record at Centre.

CHASING 200 – Head coach Larry Kindbom is five wins shy of 200 victories for his career. There are currently nine active NCAA head coaches with 200 wins among all divisions. All-time, there have been 74 collegiate football coaches to reach the 200-win plateau.

PAGE NAMED TO D3FOOTBALL.COM TEAM OF THE WEEK – Senior tight end Matt Page was named to the Team of the Week on Sept. 6. Page had a career-high eight catches for 150 yards and two TDs in a 41-34 overtime win at Carnegie Mellon University Sept. 3 It was his first start after being converted from quarterback. Page grabbed the game-tying two-point conversion with 12 seconds left, and then caught the game-winning 29-yarder in OT.
