St. Louis, Mo., August 27, 2014 – Washington University in St. Louis was selected as the favorite in the 2014 University Athletic Association (UAA) Football Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced Wednesday by the Association. The Bears are seeking their third straight and 11th conference championship in school history.
Washington U. returns 15 starters from last year's squad, which posted an 8-3 overall record and won its second straight UAA title with a 3-0 mark. The Bears also advanced to the NCAA Division III Playoffs for the second time in school history.
Case Western Reserve University and the University of Chicago tied for second in the preseason poll, while Carnegie Mellon University was fourth.
From 2008-2013, UAA teams posted a combined 106-65 record (.620 winning percentage) in non-conference play. This season marks the first in which Carnegie Mellon and CWRU are also affiliate members of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). Chicago and Washington U. will join the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) as affiliate members next season. All teams will remain members of the UAA as well and continue to play a round robin Association schedule.
Washington University opens the 2014 season at home Saturday, Sept. 6, against Ohio Northern University. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Francis Field. The game will be streamed live on the Bear Sports Network at: portal.stretchinternet.com/wustl/.
