O'Fallon, Mo., March 9, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team picked up a 7-0 victory over Luther College Saturday evening at CarShield Field in O'Fallon, Mo.
The Bears improved to 3-2-1 on the year with the win, as senior John Howard picked up his second win of the year while holding the Norse without a run for eight innings. Luther fell to 3-2 on the year.
Howard held Luther to five hits and struck out a season-high nine batters to earn the win. Freshman shortstop Caleb Durbin led the Bears with three hits while picking up his fourth multi-hit game of the season. He also led the Bears offense with three runs scored and two runs batted in.
WashU scored in the first inning and never looked back. Junior centerfielder John Ostrander knocked in Durbin who reached base with a walk. Durbin knocked in the next Bears run in the fifth inning with a triple to right field that plated junior first baseman Brian Schutter.
Senior Evan Nagel knocked in Durbin to put the Bears up 3-0. WashU added three more runs in the seventh inning, including a fielder choice RBI by freshman right fielder Jackson Gray. The Bears' final run came in the eighth inning as sophomore left fielder Sean Robinson tripled with two outs before Durbin singled through the left side to knock in his second run of the contest.
Sophomore Troy Bauer pitched the ninth inning, facing the minimum three batters while striking out one to end the game.
