St. Louis, Mo., May 1, 2018 – Sophomore John Brinkman of the Washington University in St. Louis baseball team was named to the D3baseball.com National Team of the Week on May 1 after a stellar week against Brandeis University.
Brinkman scorched the baseball this past weekend in helping WashU earn a 4-0 series sweep of the Judges. Overall, he finished the series 9-for-16 (.569), with six of his hits going for extra bases as his slugging percentage was 1.125. In addition, Brinkman knocked in 11 runs, drew two walks, was hit by a pitch, stole a base and scored five runs.
The Worden, Ill.-native had back-to-back games which he finished one extra base hit shy of hitting for the cycle including a 4-for-4 performance on Friday with two doubles, a triple and a UAA record tying seven RBI. Brinkman also found his way onto the mound and earned his first save of the season during Saturday's 7-5 victory.
On the year, Brinkman leads the Bears with a .372 batting average, 48 hits, 15 doubles and 42 runs batted in. He has a .981 fielding percentage splitting time between first and third base, with 10 appearances on the mound as well.
WashU baseball concluded the regular season with a 21-14 overall record and will await the NCAA Division III selection committee's announcement of the regional qualifiers on Sunday, May 13.
