Sauget, Ill., May 20, 2016 — Senior Julian Clarke tossed a complete game allowing one run on seven hits as No. 4 seed Washington University in St. Louis baseball team stayed alive in the 2016 NCAA Division III Central Regional with a 5-1 win over No. 2 seed and No. 19-ranked Wartburg College Friday at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill.

WashU improved to 33-17 with the win, while Wartburg ended its season with a 34-13 mark. The Bears take on No. 1 seed and No. 14-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in an elimination game at 7 p.m. UW-Whitewater eliminated WashU from the NCAA Tournament a year ago with a 3-0 win.

"I thought Julian was everything of what you needed a senior to be in an elimination game in a regional," said first-year WashU head coach Pat Bloom. "He was tough, he commanded the zone and got ahead in the count. I am very proud of him."

Clarke (6-4), who tossed a complete-game a year ago in an elimination game against UW-Whitewater, sat down nine batters in a row at one point and allowed just a solo homerun to Jake Thumann in the sixth inning. He struck out five and did not walk a batter en route to his sixth-career game.

WashU scored first for the third-straight contest in its first at-bat after junior Christian Santos doubled off the 16-foot wall to drive in senior Max Golembo.

The Bears loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the third after singles by junior Spencer Egly and Golembo and a hit-by-pitch to Darmawan. After a strikeout out by Santos, Browdy ripped a single to left to drive in two runs. Senior Kyle Kozak added an RBI groundout to push the lead to 4-0.

The Bears added the insurance run with a safety squeeze by junior Tate Maider in the eighth.
