Sauget, Ill., May 19, 2016 — No. 4 seed Washington University in St. Louis put together a late rally with three runs in the ninth but fell short in a 6-5 loss to No. 5 seed Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Thursday in the 2016 NCAA Division III Central Baseball Regional at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill.

Trailing 6-2 in the ninth, senior Max Golembo drove in a run with a two-out infield single. Junior Christian Santos then ripped a pitch to left for a two-run double to make it 6-5. Junior Ben Browdy tapped to RHIT closer Cody Sunderhaus for the final out to end the threat.

WashU had 11 hits in the loss, but committed three errors. Junior Scott Nelson (7-6) took the loss allowing five hits and four runs (two earned) in two innings with 56 pitches.

Rose-Hulman improved to 31-11 with the win, while WashU fell to 32-17. The Bears take on No. 2 seed Wartburg College (34-12) in an elimination game Friday at 3:30 p.m. Wartburg shutout Westminster College 8-0 Thursday.

"Our kids have come a long way in battling to the end. They showed the type of fight we have been preaching all year long," said first-year WashU head coach Pat Bloom. "We are not the type of team that can play sloppy baseball defensively. We made some uncharacteristic errors and mistakes in the field."

It was a quick start for WashU for the second-straight night after junior Austin Darmawan singled to lead off the game and Santos singled to push Darmawan to third. Browdy lined a double to left to score both runs to make it 2-0.

Rose-Hulman answered back with two runs in the bottom of the first of Nelson. The Fightin' Engineers added a run in the third on a throwing error by Nelson.

Leading 4-2 in the fourth, Rose-Hulman loaded the bases with no outs against freshman Zack Kotin. The righty got a lineout and then a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.

Darmawan was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, while Browdy (2-for-5, two RBIs), Golembo (2-for-5, RBI) and Santos (2-for-5, run scored, two RBIs) each had a pair of hits.

Kotin tossed six innings of relief allowing five hits and two earned runs. He struck out five and threw 81 pitches. He gave up a two-run homerun to Hazen Hamather in the eighth.
