NYU-WASHU BOX

New York, N.Y. November 1, 2009
The No. 9 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women’s soccer team needed some late heroics as the Bears escaped with a 2-1 overtime victory at New York University on Sunday afternoon at the College of Staten Island Soccer Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.

Washington University (13-2-1, 5-0-1 UAA) continues to secure a one-point lead over No. 10 University of Rochester in the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings. The Yellowjackets notched a 2-1 win over Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday. A win in Saturday’s UAA finale at the University of Chicago would secure the Bears their fourth-straight and seventh-overall UAA title.

After a scoreless fist half where Washington University outshot New York, 10-3, the Violets got on the scoreboard in the second half at the 50:29 mark. A corner kick by Emily Jenkinson went off the head of Erica Jones and was cleared off the end line by the Bears’ defense. However, Jenkinson collected the loose ball and slid it across to Kipcalkli, who pushed it past freshman goalkeeper Clara Jaques for her team-leading eighth goal of the year.

The Violets’ (9-7-1, 0-5-1 UAA) cleared away numerous chances by Washington University late in the game until a foul in the 89th minute set up the tying goal. Sophomore Lee Ann Felder’s free kick from 20 yards out found the top left corner to not the score at 1-1 with 90 seconds remaining.

It took Washington U. just 1:28 in overtime to notch the game-winning goal. Senior Elyse Hanly crossed a ball behind the Violet defense, and NYU goalkeeper Alex Walters came out of the net but misplayed the ball. Senior Becca Heymann, the reigning UAA Offensive Athlete of the Week, headed the ball over Walters for the game-winner.

Jacques made six saves in the victory, as she played all 91:28 in the goal for Washington U. The Bears outshot New York, 19-10 and had a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks.
