Bears Remain in First Place in UAA With 2-0 Win at Brandeis

The No. 9 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women’s soccer team remained in sole possession of the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings with a 2-0 victory at Brandeis University on Friday night in Waltham, Mass.

Washington U., which extended its winning streak to five games and its unbeaten streak to 13 games, has a one-point lead in the conference standings over No. 10 University of Rochester with two games to play. The Yellowjackets escaped at home on Friday with a 1-0 overtime victory over Emory University.

Sophomore Natalie Callaghan gave the Bears a 1-0 lead at the 33:28 mark as her shot from 40 yards out found the back of the net. The goal for Callaghan was her second of her career. The Judges outshot the Bears, 9-6, in the first half, but managed just one shot on goal.

Senior Becca Heymann added the insurance goal for Washington U. in the 72nd minute to make it 2-0. Junior Julie Tembunkiart made a nice run down the sideline before sending a cross into the box to Heymann, who drilled home her fifth goal of the year.

Freshman goalkeeper Clara Jaques played the first 85:54 in the nets making four saves, while junior Katy Southworth saw action in the final 4:06 making one save. Brandeis (7-6-3, 1-3-1 UAA) outshot Washington U., 15-13, while the Bears had a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Washington U. (12-2-1, 4-0-1 UAA) continues its quest for a fourth-straight conference championship on Sunday, Nov. 1, at New York University. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. (ET) at the College of Staten Island Soccer Complex.

Bear Notebook: Washington University leads the all-time series with Brandeis, 15-4-3 … The Bears have allowed just 11 goals in the 22 games against the Judges … The goal for Heymann was the 19th of her career, moving her into sole possession of 10th place on the WU all-time list … Heymann also recorded the 50th point of her career, tying for 10th on the all-time list.
