Bears Move Into Second Place With 2-0 Victory Over Case
CASE-WASHU BOX
St. Louis, Mo., October 16, 2009 – The No. 16 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women’s soccer team handed Case Western Reserve University its first loss in the University Athletic Association (UAA) with a 2-0 victory on Friday night at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo.
The Bears controlled most of the play in the first half and got on the board at the 16:24 mark. Senior Caryn Rosoff played a perfect ball through the Spartan defense to sophomore Lee Ann Felder. Felder took the ball nearly all the way to the end line inside the box before laying a perfect cross to fellow sophomore Emma Brown. She one-timed the ball into an open net to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. The goal was her UAA-leading 11th of the season.
The Bears outshot the Spartans, 8-2, and led in corner kicks 3-0 at halftime. Freshman goalkeeper Clara Jaques had just one save in the half, but it was a beauty that saved a Case Western Reserve shot from less than eight yards out.
The scoring opportunities were few and far between in the second half until the 74-minute mark for the Bears. Off of a short corner, senior Libby Held found Rosoff wide-open in front of the keeper. Rosoff tried back-healing the ball with a flick but a great team save prevented the goal.
The Red and Green tacked on its final goal of the match at the 83:57 mark when Brown helped create another finish. She cut through the Spartan defense and laid a nice ball through the box to senior Becca Heymann, who blasted the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of the year and the final tally of the match.
For the game, the Bears out shot the Spartans, 17-3, with 11 of those being on goal compared to just one for the Spartans. They also had eight corners while Case Western Reserve finished with none.
Washington University (9-2-1, 2-0-1 UAA) hosts No. 21 ranked University of Rochester on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 2:30 p.m. in a crucial conference matchup for both teams. The Yellow Jackets enter play with a 9-1-2 overall record, and sit in first place in the UAA standings with a 3-0-0 record.
