Senior Alli Alberts Named to Academic All-America Second Team

ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA TEAMS

St. Louis, Mo., November 24, 2008 – Senior outside hitter Alli Alberts of the No. 3 Washington University volleyball team has been named to the 2008 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Second Team, as announced Monday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Alberts, who has twice earned Academic All-District VII honors, is an Academic All-America selection for the first time in her career. She becomes just the sixth player in Washington University history to earn Academic All-America honors, and is the first Washington U. student-athlete to do so in a decade’s time; Jennifer Martz was the last when she was a second-team Academic All-American following the 1998 season.

Alberts, who boasts a 3.70 cumulative grade point average, is a biology and anthropology double major. A six-rotation outside hitter, she wrapped up the 2008 season ranking third on the team in kills (305) and second in digs (396). She ends her career on the Danforth campus as a versatile offensive and defensive player, tallying 711 career kills and 1,203 digs.

The 2008 season resulted in a number of national and conference accolades for Alberts. She was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III National Player of the Week on Oct. 7, and was featured in the Faces in the Crowd section of the Nov. 3 issue of Sports Illustrated.

Alberts was a first-team AVCA All-Central Region selection, leading to her placement on the AVCA All-America second team. She was also a first-team all-UAA selection, after earning honorable mention all-UAA honors in 2007, and she has earned Academic all-UAA accolades in each of the last three years.

Washington University ended its season with a 32-7 overall record and made its 22nd-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Bears won the 2008 UAA Championship with a 3-2 win over eventual national champion Emory University on Nov. 8, and were eliminated from postseason play in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional final by Ohio Northern University.
