WU Track and Field Meets Seven NCAA Provisional Times
Naperville, Ill., May 9, 2008 – The Washington University men’s and women’s track and field teams met seven NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship provisional qualifying times at the two-day Dr. Keeler Invitational on the campus of North Central College in Naperville, Ill., on Thursday-Friday, May 8-9.
Senior Tyler Mulkin and freshman Taryn Surtees placed second and third respectively in the 5,000-meter run on Thursday evening, and both submitted NCAA provisional qualifying times in the race. Mulkin finished in 17:27.77, just 13 seconds behind her season-best time, and Surtees crossed the finish line less than a second behind Mulkin, with a time of 17:28.33.
The men’s squad boasted an NCAA provisional qualifier in the 10,000-meter run on Thursday night, as senior Jesse McDaniel took fourth place in the race with a time of 30:39.59, 8.70 seconds behind the first-place finisher.
In Friday’s action, the Washington U. women’s team met four more provisional qualifying standards. Senior Angela Hartman was the runner-up in the 800-meter run, with a season best and NCAA provisional mark of 2:14.60. Two Bears eclipsed the provisional mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Senior Abbey Hartmann placed third in the event with a time of 10:56.69, and sophomore Hope Rathnam came in seventh, finishing in 11:02.40.
Junior Danielle Wadlington was the fourth WU women’s student-athlete to meet NCAA standards on Friday, placing fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15:00, but she was 0.22 behind her season-best time.
For the men’s team, freshman Ben Harmon came in fourth in the long jump with a distance of 6.61 meters, and the WU men’s 4x100 relay team grabbed a fourth place finish with a season-best mark of 42.20, just 0.20 shy of the provisional standard.
The Washington U. men’s and women’s track and field teams will be back in action from Tuesday-Friday, May 13-16, at the Gregory Invitational and Multi Competition in Naperville, Ill. The meet will serve as the Bears’ final warm-up before the 2008 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships, to be held Thursday-Saturday, May 22-24, in Oshkosh, Wis. |
