Washington U. Women's Records Broken at SIUE Twilight Meet

Edwardsville, Ill., April 26, 2008 – Senior Morgen-Leonard Fleckman and junior Danielle Wadlington broke a pair of Washington University in St. Louis women’s track and field outdoor school records at the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville Twilight Meet in Edwardsville, Ill., on Saturday evening.  The WU women placed fourth at the meet, while the Bears’ men’s track and field team came in 10th.

Leonard-Fleckman broke her own school record in the pole vault, taking first at the event with an NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship provisional height of 3.75 meters. She set the old mark of 3.72 meters in 2006. Wadlington’s record-breaking time of 1:02.52 in the 400-meter hurdles was good for third place at the Twilight meet and eclipsed NCAA provisional qualifying standards. She broke Hallie Hutchen’s five-year old school record time of 1:02.75, and was just 0.52 shy of meeting the 2008 NCAA automatic time.

Senior Angela Hartman nearly became the third Bear to qualify for the NCAA championships, winning the 800-meter run in 2:15.71. Her first-place time left her 0.71 shy of the NCAA provisional mark. The Red and Green’s third event winner of the meet was senior Abbey Hartmann, who captured the 1,500 in 4:42.13.

Also submitting strong performances for the Washington U. women’s squad was freshman Taryn Surtees, who placed second in the 1.500 with a time of 4:43.34, and junior Alli Alberts, whose javelin toss of 36.92 meters was good for a fourth-place finish.

Sophomore Keith England was the highest individual finisher for the WU men, taking third place in the javelin toss, reaching 54.82 meters. Junior Tanner Coghill also earned a top-five placement, finishing the 400-meter hurdles in 54.65, good for fourth.

Freshman Chris Brennan came in seventh in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.30, freshman Ben Harmon cleared a season-best height of 4.25 meters to grab eighth in the pole vault and senior Doug Beattie was eighth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.13.

The Washington University men’s and women’s track and field teams will be back in action on Saturday, May 3, when they will compete at the Butler Twilight Meet in Indianapolis, Ind.
