Washington U. Women's Track Wins Eighth-Straight UAA Title

Chicago, Ill., April 20, 2008 – The Washington University women’s track and field team outlasted the University of Chicago to repeat as University Athletic Association (UAA) outdoor champions at the Haydon Track in Chicago, Ill., on Sunday, April 20. For the women’s team it was the eighth-straight year they have brought the UAA outdoor title home to St. Louis.

The Washington U. women’s squad was led by junior Danielle Wadlington, who earned all-UAA honors in four individual events on Sunday, winning two UAA titles. The Bears’ men’s team came in fourth place at the championship meet.

Wadlington took first in the triple jump and the 100-meter hurdles, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championship in the 100 hurdles. She reached a distance of 12.02 meters to win the triple jump, and submitted a provisional qualifying time of 14.91 in the 100-meter hurdles, although the mark was shy of her season-best time of 14.78.

Wadlington also was the runner-up in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 25.64, just 0.32 shy of meeting NCAA provisional standards, and she placed third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.68.    

While Wadlington turned in the best all-around day for the women’s squad, she was one of four Bears to bring home UAA individual titles and one of eight  female student-athletes to earn all-UAA honors on Sunday. Other event winners for the WU women were junior Alli Alberts, who took the javelin with a Haydon Track record distance of 36.53 meters and junior Caitlin Molloy, who won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.63.

Alberts also garnered all-UAA recognition in the high jump, clearing 1.56 meters to tie for first with Appie Hirve of the University of Chicago, but she was the runner-up after a deciding jump off. The Bears also had another student-athlete earn all-UAA honors in the 400-meter hurdles, as sophomore Allison Lee placed third in 1:06.88, just 0.25 behind Molloy.

The Bears also had runner-up and third-place finishes in two events. Sophomore Molly Schlamb came in second in the 800-meter run in 2:22.28, while senior Lisa Sudmeier placed third, finishing in 2:23.06. Senior Abbey Hartmann was the second-place finisher in the 1,500-meter run, submitting a time of 4:48.90, while Sudmeier earned her second third-place finish of the day, running the 1,500 in 4:49.90.

Senior Tyler Mulkin was the team’s eighth all-UAA performer, placing second in the 5,000-meter run in 17:27.64. The Bears also won the 4x400-meter relay in 3:59.37, a Haydon Track record, and placed third in the 4x100-meter relay, as did the WU men’s team.

Junior Tanner Coghill had the best individual effort of the day for the Red and Green’s men’s squad, winning the 400-meter hurdles with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 53.22. Coghill was one of five WU men’s student-athletes to garner all-UAA honors.

Sophomore Keith England had a throw of 55.39 meters in the javelin finals, coming in second place. Sophomore Iboro Umana was another runner-up for the Bears, coming in second in the 400-meter dash, with a time of 49.81. Junior Nate Koslof also had a strong finish in the 400, placing fourth in 50.40.

Senior Jesse McDaniel ran to a top-three finish in the 5,000-meter run, finishing in 14:58.20. The Bears other all-UAA performance came in the 4x400-meter relay, where they earned a second-place finish with a time of 3:18.48.

The Bears will return to action on Saturday, April 26, when they compete at the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville Cougar Open in Edwardsville, Ill.

 

Three Bears Provisionally Qualify for NCAA's at UAA Outdoors

Chicago, Ill., April 19, 2008 – The Washington University women’s track and field team ranks second, while the men are third after one day of competition at the two-day University Athletic Association (UAA) outdoor track and field championships at the Ted Haydon Track on the campus of the University of Chicago in Chicago, Ill., on Saturday, April 19. Additionally, three Bears, two female and one male student-athlete, met provisional NCAA qualifying standards on Saturday.

Taking second and provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase was senior Abbey Hartmann, finishing with a time of 11:11.46. Hartmann was one of two Bears on the women’s team to meet NCAA provisional standards on Saturday, as junior Danielle Wadlington accomplished the same feat in the 100-meter hurdles.

Wadlington stood in first place after the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles with a provisional time of 14.86. She also ranks first after the preliminaries of the 200-meter dash, submitting a time of 25.49, and is second in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 12.48.

Freshman Ben Harmon was the men’s provisional NCAA qualifier on Saturday, winning the long jump finals with a leap of 7.08 meters. Freshman Scott Pettit was the men’s other first-place competitor on the day, clearing a height of 4.55 meters to take the pole vault crown.

Other strong finishes from the WU men’s team came from freshman Dave Spandorfer, who placed fourth in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 32:22.09, senior Matt Amantea, who placed fourth in the long jump with a season-best distance of 6.63 meters, and sophomore Matt Kruger, who came in sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:01.96.

The women’s team featured four other student-athletes who garnered individual all-UAA recognition, and one first-place relay squad. Senior Tyler Mulkin won the 10,000-meter run with a time of 36:41.92, grabbing the only individual win of the day for the women’s team.

The 3,200-relay team of freshman Vie Duncan, senior Angela Hartman, sophomore Kate Gallagher and sophomore Molly Schlamb won the UAA title with a time of 9:35.09.

Junior Jessica Lane and senior Morgen Leonard-Fleckman placed second and third respectively in the pole vault finals. Lane tied with UAA champion Tracy Whittaker of Emory University with a height of 3.35 meters, but fell in a jump off. Leonard-Fleckman took third with leap of 3.20 meters.

Freshman Taryn Surtees was the Red and Green’s other top-three finisher, coming in third place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a season-best time of 11:16.64. Like Wadlington, sophomore Allison Lee enters Sunday’s competition in first place after a preliminary event, ranking first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:07.01.

Washington University will conclude competition at the UAA Outdoor Championships on Sunday, April 20. The field events are scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m., while the track events will commence at 11:30 a.m.
