Women Take First Place, Men Second, at WU Twilight Meet

St. Louis, Mo., March 21, 2008 – The Washington University women’s track and field team came in first place, and the men’s team finished in the runner-up position in the WU Twilight Meet at Bushyhead Track in St. Louis, Mo., on Friday. The WU Twilight was the first outdoor meet of the year for the WU men’s and women’s squads. The women’s team is coming off of a third-place finish at the 2008 NCAA Division III Indoor Championship meet.

Junior Jessica Lane led the women’s squad by provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the pole vault with a height of 3.50 meters, good for a third-place finish.

The women’s squad had several other strong finishes at Friday’s meet. Senior Tyler Mulkin finished in second place in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:40.58, and senior Lisa Sudmeier was not far behind, placing 3rd with a time of 10:40.74,

Junior Aubrey Edwards came in third place in the discuss throw, measuring a distance of 39.78 meters in the finals, and junior Danielle Wadlington was the runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 1:05.11.

For the Washington University men, junior Tanner Coghill nearly provisionally qualified in the 400-meter hurdles, winning the race with a time of 54.77, just 0.27 shy of meeting NCAA provisional standards. 

The Bears featured three other event winners on Friday. Senior Matt Amantea won the long jump with a distance of 6.57 meters, sophomore Keith England took the top spot in the javelin throw with a toss of 55.35 meters in the finals, and freshman Dave Spandorfer won the 3,000-meter run in 9:01.71.

Senior Doug Beattie was also in action at Friday’s meet, coming in 4th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.09, 0.31 shy of NCAA provisional standards.

The Washington University men’s and women’s track and field squads will return to action on Thursday, March 27, for the first day of the three-day Washington University Invitational meet, held at Bushyhead Track in St. Louis, Mo.
