Claire Voris Pitches WU Past No. 1 DePauw in Second Game
St. Louis, Mo., May 3, 2008 – The No. 16 Washington University in St. Louis softball team ended No. 1 DePauw's 37-game winning streak with a 1-0 win in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at the WU Softball Field in St. Louis, Mo.
In game one, DePauw rallied with a run in the seventh and three in the eighth for a 4-1 victory. The 37-game winning streak by DePauw was the second longest in Division III history.
Freshman Claire Voris allowed just two hits and struck out one in game two as she improved her overall record to 14-5. Voris walked six in the victory, and stranded nine DePauw runners.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Ally Berenter and senior Amy Vukovich each singled. Junior Lindsay Cavarra then delivered the game-winning hit as she doubled to left field scoring Berenter for the lone run of the game. Junior Kerry Kreitman and Cavarra each had two hits for the Bears. DePauw’s Megan Soultz (33-2) went six innings allowing six hits and one earned run.
Voris and Soultz were also involved in a pitcher’s dual in game one. The Bears got the first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth after a communication error by the Tigers.
Kreitman singled to lead off the sixth, and then was pinch run for by sophomore Ashton Hitchcock. A sacrifice by Berenter and a groundout by Vukovich pushed Hitchcock to third with two outs. Cavarra then drove Hitchcock in with an RBI single that Soultz and third baseman Kelly Schwerzler let drop in between them.
Voris was one strike away from picking up a win in game one, but an RBI from Schwerzler in the top of the seventh tied the score at 1-1. With the bases loaded in the top of the eighth, Ashlee Anton cleared the bases with a double to right center giving DePauw the 4-1 advantage.
Voris took the loss for the Bears, allowing seven hits and three earned runs in eight innings pitched. Soultz gave up nine hits and one earned run, picking up her 33rd win of the season. Senior Kaylyn Eash, Kreitman and Vukovich had two hits apiece for the Bears, who had nine in the loss.
