Bears Land Four on NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team
St. Louis, Mo., May 12, 2009 – Fresh of its third place finish at the 2009 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional, the Washington University in St. Louis softball team had four student-athletes named to the All-Tournament Team, as announced on Monday.
Freshman Alyssa Abramoski was one of three outfielders named to the 15-person team, and sophomore pitcher Claire Voris joined Megan Sperry of Webster University as the two pitchers. Also earning at-large honors was senior catcher Lindsay Cavarra and junior third baseman Carter Malouf.
Abramoski continued her late season surge hitting .412 (7-17) with a team-leading three sacrifice hits. She was 7-for-11 in the Bears’ three victories, including a 3-for-4 performance with an RBI in the win against No. 12 Wartburg.
Voris posted a 3-2 overall record with a 1.50 earned run average in 32 2/3 innings pitched. She struck out 34 batters while allowing just seven earned runs. After dropping the opener to Luther College, 1-0 in 10 innings, Voris tossed 18-straight scoreless innings in a three-game sweep of No. 3 Central, No. 12 Wartburg and Luther in the loser’s bracket.
Cavarra batted a Washington University-best .471 (8-17) with one home run and four RBI. She registered a hit in all five games, including a 3-for-3 performance with an RBI in a 5-1 win over No. 12 Wartburg.
Malouf hit .375 (6-16) with a double and two RBI and scored a team-best four runs. She hit safely in four of five games played, and had two hits against No. 3 Central and Webster.
The Bears concluded their season with a 3-2 record at the Midwest Regional held last weekend in Indianola, Iowa. After dropping a 1-0 game to Luther College in the opening round, Washington U. posted consecutive victories over No. 3 Central, No. 12 Wartburg and Luther in the loser’s bracket to stay alive. The Bears, who made their eighth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance, end their season with a 27-13 overall record. Washington U. also won the University Athletic Association (UAA) title for the sixth-straight season.
