Eash's Career Day Leads Bears Past Westminster

St. Louis, Mo., April 9, 2008Senior Kaylyn Eash threw a perfect game and went 3-for-5 with three home runs and seven RBI as the No. 15 Washington University in St. Louis softball team swept a doubleheader from Westminster College on Wednesday afternoon at the WU Softball Field. 

Freshman pitcher Claire Voris had 10 strikeouts in the 5-0 victory in game one, and then Eash threw a perfect game in the Bears’ 13-0 win in five innings in game two.

Senior Laura D’Andrea went 1-for-4 with a run scored in game one, breaking the all-time runs scored record set by Liz Swary (2002-05). D’Andrea has scored 127 runs in 162 career games played for the Red and Green.

Voris was dominating the entire game for the Bears, allowing just two singles, as she improved to 13-3 on the mound.  She allowed a single with one out in the second inning, and then gave up a single with two outs in the seventh.

Sophomore Ally Berenter broke a scoreless tie in the third inning with a two-run single. Eash made it 3-0 in the fifth inning with a towering home run to centerfield.

The Bears added two more runs in the fifth. Sophomore Ashton Hitchcock doubled home senior Amy Vukovich to make it 4-0, and then senior Krista Swip added an RBI single to round out the scoring. Junior Kerry Kreitman had two hits in the victory for the Bears.

Washington U. busted the second game open with 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Bears had eight hits in the inning, including home runs by Eash and D’Andrea.

An RBI single by Kreitman plated the first run of the game, and then Vukovich drove in two with a double to centerfield. After a pitching change, Eash drilled a three-run home run and then D’Andrea followed with a two-run home run. An RBI triple by Kreitman pushed the advantage to 9-0, and then Vukovich added an RBI single for the 10th run of the inning.

Eash, who finished game two 2-for-3 with home runs and a career-high six RBI, hit an opp
osite field three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead to 13-0. She now has 15 home runs in her career, tied for third with Laurel Sagartz (2003-07) on the WU all-time list. Eash struck out two and walked none as she threw the seventh perfect game in school history and 12th no-hitter.

Kreitman was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Vukovich was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. The Bears had nine hits in the victory, and took advantage of three errors by the Blue Jays. Westminster dropped to 3-21 with the doubleheader sweep.

Washington University (22-7) competes in the Illinois Wesleyan University Invitational this weekend in Bloomington, Ill. The Bears take on Hope College at Noon and the host Illinois Wesleyan at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 13.
