Bears Drop Doubleheader at Missouri-St. Louis

St. Louis, Mo., April 24, 2008 – The No. 14 Washington University in St. Louis softball team dropped a doubleheader at Division II University of Missouri-St. Louis on Thursday night at the UMSL Softball Field in St. Louis, Mo. UMSL posted a 3-0 victory in game one, and then scored two runs in the fifth for a 5-3 win in the nightcap.

Missouri-St. Louis (22-22) scored all three runs in the first inning of game one. Kelly Essner had an RBI single with no outs, and then Carly Maddock added a two-out two RBI single pushing the lead to 3-0. Essner was in command the entire game allowing just two hits. She retired the final 17 batters of the game, en route to picking up her second win of the season.

Senior Kaylyn Eash (3-4) suffered the loss for the Bears allowing eight hits and three earned runs in five innings pitched. Freshman Claire Voris threw a perfect sixth inning recording one strikeout.

UMSL took a 1-0 lead in game two after Megan Riggs led off the first inning with a triple and then scored on an RBI single from Essner. The Bears answered back with a run in the top of the third to knot the score at 1-1. Senior Karli Stander reached on a bunt with one out, and then scored on an RBI from junior Kerry Kreitman.

The Tritons took advantage of two errors in the bottom of the third to score a pair of unearned runs. Riggs led of the inning with a bunt single, and then advanced to second when Madyson Hern reached on a fielder’s choice. Essner sacrificed Hern to second and Riggs to third, and then allowed Riggs to score on a wild throw from Kreitman. Hern came around for the third run of the game after senior Krista Swip dropped a fly ball with two outs.

Senior Laura D’Andrea singled to lead off the fourth inning for the Bears, and then stole second. Senior Amy Vukovich followed with a single to right scoring D’Andrea to trim the lead to 3-2. After Stander walked to load the bases, Fieser singled to left field with two outs scoring Vukovich to knot the score at 3-3.

Fieser replaced Voris in the bottom of the fifth and UMSL responded with three-consecutive hits. Hern doubled and Essner singled, giving UMSL second and third with no outs. Alex Ogle followed with a double scoring Hern and Essner to give the Tritons the 5-3 advantage.

Voris made the start for the Bears in game two allowing four hits and one earned run in 4 2/3 innings pitched. She also struck out six and walked one in the no decision. Fieser (6-1) suffered her first loss allowing four hits and two earned runs in 1 1/3 innings in the circle.

Fieser and D’Andrea each had two hits for the Bears, which had seven hits in the loss. Allyson DeFosset (13-13) picked up the win for UMSL, allowing two hits and no earned runs while striking out seven.

Washington U. (22-9) travels to Webster University for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 26, at Noon.
