Watts Captures Second ITA National Championship

Washington University in St. Louis senior John Watts captured his second men’s tennis individual national title with a 6-3, 643 victory over Andy Peters of Middlebury College in the finals of 2009 Division III ITA National Small College Championship on Saturday in Mobile, Ala.

Watts, who won the 2007 ITA Championship and placed third in 2006 and 2008, is 12-1 this year in singles and 110-17 (.866) in his four-year career.

Watts qualified for the Super Bowl of Small College Championships, where he dropped a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 decision to the Junior College National champion, Damian Hume of Collin County Community College.

 

Watts Advances to ITA Championship Match

Senior John Watts of the Washington University in St. Louis men’s tennis team advanced to the championship match of the Division III Wilson/ITA National Small College Championship with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Hayden White of Washington and Lee University on Friday morning in Mobile, Ala.

Watts, who won the 2007 ITA singles championship and placed third in 2006 and 2008, takes on Andy Peters of Middlebury College in the finals on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. He improved his overall Washington U. singles record to 108-16 (.871).

The doubles team of juniors Isaac Stein and Max Woods rebounded from an opening round loss with two victories on Friday to place fifth. The duo ousted Brad Fenter and Nick Kreinas of the University of Texas-Tyler in the consolation semifinals, 3-6, 6-2, 10-7, and then defeated Brian Pybas and Marc Vartabedian of University of California-Santa Cruz in the fifth-place match, 6-4, 3-6, 10-5.

 

Watts Advances to ITA Semis for Fourth Straight Year

Senior John Watts of the Washington University in St. Louis men’s tennis team advanced to the singles semifinals of the Division III Wilson/ITA National Small College Championships for the fourth-straight year on Thursday at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala.

Watts, the top seed in the eight-man draw, defeated Dillon Pottish of Emory University, 7-5, 6-0, to advance to the semifinals. He will take on Hayden White of Washington and Lee University on Friday at 8:30 a.m. Watts won the 2007 ITA Singles championship and placed third in 2006 and 2008.

The doubles team of juniors Isaac Stein and Max Woods dropped its first round match to top-seeded Pottish and Chris Goodwin from Emory, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). Stein and Woods take on Brad Fenter and Nick Kreinas of the University of Texas-Tyler in the consolation semifinals on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
