St. Louis, Mo., May 3, 2008 – The Washington University baseball team lost, 14-4, to visiting Greenville College in its 2008 season finale at Kelly Field in St. Louis, Mo., on Saturday afternoon. The Bears end the season with a 15-14 overall record, the program’s 10th-straight winning season.

Greenville College (20-17) jumped on Washington U. starter David Leibman in third inning, coming out of the frame with a four-run lead. Justin Litteken drove in the first run of the game, hitting a single to left field to score Michael Haynes. Right fielder Stephen Kraft came up next and hit a home run to left field to score two runs and signal the end of the day for Liebman.

Freshman Eric Myjak came in to relieve Liebman, but faced just three batters, walking all three. Washington University used five pitchers over the course of the game, but Liebman was tabbed with the loss, dropping him to 1-3 on the year. In 2.2 innings pitched he gave up three runs with three strikeouts.

The Red and Green got back into the game in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a pair of runs. Senior Dave Working, playing his final game for Washington University, led off with a double to left field, and scored on a single by junior Gregg Kennedy. Kennedy came around to tally the Bears’ second run of the frame when freshman Matt Bayer sent a base hit to center field.

The Panthers would go on to score 10 unanswered runs en route to the win. Kraft broke the game open for Greenville with one swing of the bat in the sixth inning, hitting a grand slam to give the visiting team an 8-2 lead, his second homer of the game. The Panthers’ third home run came in the seventh innings, when first baseman Stefan Neece sent a two-run shot to deep left field, his 14th homer of 2008.

The Bears also tallied two runs in the last of the eighth inning, scoring on an RBI single from freshman Travis May and a sacrifice fly by junior Scott Kennedy. Dave DeJulio (4-5) picked up the win for Greenville, pitching 7.1 innings, giving up four earned runs on six hits, and striking out three.
