Zander Lehmann Earns First-Team Academic All-America Honors
St. Louis, Mo., May 26, 2009 – Washington University senior right fielder Zander Lehmann has been selected to the 2009 ESPN the Magazine Baseball Academic All-America First-Team, as announced Tuesday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He becomes the first student-athlete in Washington University history to earn first-team baseball Academic All-America honors and the program’s seventh Academic All-American overall.
Lehmann graduated from Washington University in May as a psychology major with a 3.85 cumulative grade point average. He was named an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VII first-team member in 2009, earning first-team Academic All-District honors for the second year in a row.
As a team captain in 2009, Lehmann was the Washington University team leader on and off the field. He led the Bears in batting (.423), home runs (seven), RBI (30), runs scored (47), triples (five) and slugging percentage (.704). He was a first-team All-University Athletic Association (UAA) selection and a member of the UAA All-Tournament Team.
He recorded a hit in 32 of Washington University’s 37 games, and ended the season on a 14-game hitting streak. Lehmann was named the UAA Athlete of the Week on May 4, after leading the Red and Green to a 5-0 week while hitting .563 with three home runs, 10 RBI and a slugging percentage of 1.250.
The on field success was not limited to the 2009 season as Lehmann ended his four years on the Danforth Campus ranked in the top-10 in school history in nearly every major offensive category. His .373 career batting average is the fifth-best mark at Washington University and he finished third in hits (180), fifth in runs scored (139), tied for eighth in home runs (15) and 11th in RBI (109).
The Washington University baseball team finished the season with a 25-12 overall record and qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament for the seventh time in school history, and the fourth time over the past five seasons. |
