WU Men's Swimming Earns Sixth-Straight Top-20 NCAA Finish

Oxford, Ohio, March 22, 2008 - The Washington University men’s swimming and diving team finished in 13th place in the overall standings at the 2008 NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships on the campus of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, on Saturday, March 22.
The Washington U. men’s squad placed in the top-20 at the NCAA Championships for the sixth-straight year under eighth-year head coach Brad Shively, and improved on their 18th-place finish at the 2007 championships.
The Bears had two swimmers, freshman Michael Flanagan and sophomore Alex Beyer garner All-America honors on the final day of competition.
Flanagan had Washington University’s best overall finish on the day, placing fifth in the 200-yard butterfly. Flanagan posted a Washington U. record time of 1:50.19 in the finals, improving on his season-best time by 1.58. Junior Perry Bullock also swam in the 200-yard butterfly, ranking in 27th place after the preliminary session with a time of 1:54.44.
Beyer’s All-America finish came in the 1,650-yard freestyle, where he placed 15th with a time of 16:02.00. It marked the first time he received All-America honors for the 1,650-free.
Junior Kevin Leckey was the fourth Bear to compete in individual action on Saturday, coming in 18th in the 100-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 45.67.
Washington U. also swam in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Leckey, freshman David Chao, Beyer and sophomore Brian Kushner submitted a time of 3:06.79 in the preliminaries, just missing out on a chance to swim in the finals, placing 17th.
Men's Swimming in 10th Place After Two Days of NCAA Champs

Oxford, Ohio, March 21, 2008 - The Washington University men’s swimming and diving team used a strong finish in the final event of the day to surge to 10th place in the overall standings at the 2008 NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships on the campus of Miami University in Miami, Ohio, on Friday, March 21.
Washington U. placed third in the 800-yard freestyle relay, posting a season-best time of 6:43.83. The team of sophomore Alex Beyer, freshman David Chao, sophomore Brian Kushner and junior Kevin Leckey tallied 32 team points in the relay, giving the Bears 85 points through two days of competition. The Red and Green also improved on their fifth-place national finish in the relay a year ago.
Beyer had the Bears’ best personal finish of the day, breaking the school record in the 400-yard individual medley in the Friday morning preliminaries. Beyer posted a time of 3:58.35 in the 400 IM prelims, and went on to place fourth in the evening session with a time of 3:58.55. He also earned All-America honors in the 400 IM in 2007, finishing in 11th place.
Junior Perry Bullock also earned All-America accolades in the 400-yard IM, coming in 12th with a time of 4:05.26. It is the first time he swam to an All-America finish in the event.
The Bears had swimmers in action in two other individual events on Friday, and competed in another relay. Freshman Michael Flanagan came in 29th in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 51.43. WU had three swimmers compete in the 200-yard freestyle preliminaries, with Chao coming in 20th with a season-best time of 1:42.06, Leckey placing 21st with a time of 1:42.27 and Kushner taking 25th in 1:42.64.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Kushner, Beyer, Flanagan and Leckey posted a season-best time of 1:35.30, coming in 19th place.
The Washington U. men’s swimming and diving team concludes action in the 2008 NCAA Championships on Saturday, March 22, in Oxford, Ohio, when the final seven events will be decided.

Oxford, Ohio, March 20, 2008 - The Washington University men’s swimming and diving team stands in 13th place after the first day of competition in the 2008 NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships on the campus of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, on Thursday, March 20. The Bears, who tallied 33 points on day one, had five student-athletes garner All-America honors through six scored events.
Sophomore Alex Beyer had Washington University’s highest individual finish of the day, grabbing ninth place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:31.81. He also broke the Washington U. school record in the preliminaries on Thursday morning, posting a time of 4:29.79. He earns All-America honors in the 500-yard freestyle for the second-straight year; he placed 13th a year ago.
Sophomore Brian Kushner also earned an All-America finish in the 500-yard freestyle, submitting a personal best time of 4:31.97 in the finals, coming in 12th place. He grabs All-America honors in the 500-yard freestyle for the first time in his career.
Junior Kevin Leckey also swam to an individual All-America finish, coming in 16th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.05 in the finals. He had a season-best time of 20.77 in the preliminaries. The All-America honor is the ninth of his career and the first in the 50-yard freestyle.
The Bears also had a top-16 All-America finish in the 400-yard medley relay, placing 10th overall with a season-best time of 3:25.73. The team of Leckey, Beyer, freshman Michael Flanagan and freshman David Chao swam on the Bears’ 10th-place team.
Junior Perry Bullock was also in competition on Thursday, taking 20th place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:53.55.
The Washington U. men’s swimming and diving team will return to action on Friday, March 21, for the second day of action at the 2008 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. |
