Women's Swimming and Diving Places Sixth at NCAA Champs

FINAL RESULTS | TEAM STANDINGS

Oxford, Ohio, March 15, 2008 - The Washington University women’s swimming and diving team swam to the second-best NCAA finish in program history, placing sixth overall at the 2008 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on the campus of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, on Saturday, March 15. Washington University broke three school records on the final day of competition, in the 1,650-yard freestyle, the 200-yard backstroke and the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Junior Kelly Kono posted the Bears’ highest finish of the day, breaking the school record in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a third-place time of 17:11.16. Kono topped her own record of 17:11.59, which she set in 2007, and earned All-America honors in the 1,650 for the third time in her career. Her best best-previous finish in the race at the NCAA Championships was fourth.

Sophomore Jessie Lodewyk also earned All-America honors in the 1,650 freestyle, coming in ninth place with a season-best time of 17:23.58. She received All-America accolades in the event for the second-straight year, finishing 12th in 2007.

Senior Meredith Nordbrock recorded her third All-America finish of the meet, placing fifth in the 200-yard backstroke with a Washington University record time of 2:01.97. She broke the old record of 2:03.11, which she set and 2007, and tied her best-ever finish in the event, coming in fifth in 2007 and 2005.

Senior Priya Srikanth was the Bears’ fourth athlete to earn individual All-America accolades on the last day of the championship meet. Srikanth came in eighth place in the three-meter springboard event with 382.90 points in the finals. It was her best-ever finish in the event, as she also received All-America recognition in 2006 with a 16th-place finish.

In relay action, the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Kono, sophomore Liz Caravati, senior Kristen Mann, and Nordbrock turned in an All-America ninth-place time of 3:30.85. The foursome’s time of 3:30.85 broke the old Washington U. record of 3:31.06, which was set in 2007.

Senior Katie Hodges also competed on Saturday, coming in 29th in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:09.82.

 

WU Women's Swimming and Diving in Second at NCAA's

DAY 2 RESULTS | TEAM STANDINGS

Oxford, Ohio, March 14, 2008 - The Washington University women’s swimming and diving team scored in four events on the second day of competition at the 2008 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships on the campus of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, on Thursday, March 13, and stand in sixth place after two days of competition. The Bears have tallied 156 points through 13 scored events.

Senior Meredith Nordbrock swam to the Bears’ best individual finish of the day, coming in fourth in the 400-yard individual medley finals. Nordbrock’s time of 4:22.19 set a new Washington University record, and broke the NCAA record of 4:22.75, which stood until 2008 event champion Amanda Nicholson of Williams College posted a time of 4:20.31 on Friday. She earns All-America honors in the 400-IM for the first time in her career.

Junior Kelly Kono finished in seventh place in the 200-yard freestyle, becoming the second Bear to earn individual All-America honors on Friday night. Kono swam a season-best time of 1:53.19 in the finals, earning All-America honors in the event for the third time, and recording her highest-ever finish in the event.

Two Washington U. relays posted top-five finishes on Friday. The 800-yard freestyle relay team came in fourth place with a season-best time of 7:36.71. Kono, sophomore Jessie Lodewyk, senior Katie Hodges and Nordbrock teamed to earn All-America honors in the relay.

The Red and Green placed fifth in the 200-yard medley relay. Freshman Claire Henderson, Nordbrock, senior Kristen Mann and sophomore Liz Caravati combined to post a season-best time of 1:47.38, missing the Washington U. school record by just .10.

In other individual action on Friday, Mann placed 19th in the 100-yard butterfly finals with a time of 58.83, Lodewyk came in 25th in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.31, and Henderson finished 23rd in the 100-yard backstroke in 59.37.

Washington University concludes action at the 2008 NCAA Championship meet on Saturday, March 15, when the final seven national championships will be decided.

 

Women's Swimming and Diving Fifth at NCAA Championships

DAY 1 RESULTS | TEAM STANDINGS

Oxford, Ohio, March 13, 2008 - The Washington University women’s swimming and diving team stands in fifth place after one day of competition at the 2008 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships on the campus of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, on Thursday, March 13. The Bears tallied 71 points through six scored events and are in a tie with Williams College.

Senior Meredith Nordbrock had Washington U.’s best finish of the day, coming in third place in the 200-yard individual medley with a school record-breaking time of 2:02.97. Her third-place finish was a personal best in the 200 IM at the NCAA Championships; she placed fourth in 2007. Nordbrock broke the old school record of 2:05.13, which she set in 2007.

Also earning individual All-America honors on Thursday were senior diver Priya Srikanth, junior Kelly Kono and sophomore Jessie Lodewyk.

Srikanth finished in fifth place in the one-meter diving springboard event, tallying 433.90 points. The fifth-place finish is a new best for Srikanth, who came in 11th at the 2007 national championship meet.

Kono placed eighth in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing with a season-best time of 4:59.25. She earns All-America honors in the 500-freestyle for the third-consecutive year, finishing second a year ago and sixth in 2006. Lodewyk came in 15th in the 500-yard freestyle, with a finals time of 5:07.57.

Washington U. qualified for the finals in the 400-medley relay, grabbing fifth place. The team of freshman Claire Henderson, Nordbrock, Lodewyk and Kono swam a season-best time of 3:55.22.

Senior Katie Hodges was also in solo competition, coming in 35th in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:10.22. The Bears competed in the 200-yard freestyle relay, where senior Kristen Mann, Hodges, Henderson and sophomore Liz Caravati placed 21st with a time of 1:40.30.

Washington University resumes action at the 2008 NCAA Championship meet on Friday, March 14, when seven more national championships will be decided.
