Men's Swimming Posts Highest Fall GPA Among all Divisions
St. Louis, Mo., February 9, 2009 - The Washington University men’s and women’s swimming teams received College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) SPEEDO Academic All-America honors for the 2008 Fall semester, as announced by the association.
The WU men’s swimming team led institutions at all three NCAA Divisions with a 3.48 cumulative grade point average (GPA). The women’s team posted a combined GPA of 3.36 during the fall academic period. The men’s and women’s combined fall GPA of 3.42 ranks third in the nation.
“This recognition really speaks volumes to the amount of work that our kids put into both competitive and academic success,” said head men’s and women’s swimming coach Brad Shively. “At the beginning of every season it is a goal of ours to strive for great things in the water and in the classroom. Washington University is not an institution where academics and athletics are mutually exclusive, and it is rewarding to see this team take that virtue to heart.”
A total of 273 teams, 184 women’s and 89 men’s, qualified for the academic listings by recording a team grade point average of 3.00 or better during the fall semester of 2008.
The Washington University men’s and women’s swimming teams will return to action when they compete in the 2009 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, to be held Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 11-14, at the Gerald Ratner Athletics Center in Chicago, Ill. |
