Alex Beyer Earns UAA and CollegeSwimming.com Accolades

St. Louis, Mo., November 11, 2008 - Washington University men’s swimmer Alex Beyer has been named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week and CollegeSwimming.com NCAA Division III Men’s Athlete of the Week, as announced by the organizations on Tuesday.

A nine-time NCAA Division III All-America honoree, Beyer earns UAA Athlete of the Week honors for the third time in his career and CollegeSwimming.com Athlete of the Week honors for the first time. He is the first swimmer to garner CollegeSwimming.com Athlete of the Week honors since Meredith Nordbrock was a recipient on Nov. 17, 2004.

Beyer receives the conference and national accolades after winning three individual events in leading the Washington University men’s swimming team to a first-place finish at the University of Chicago Maroon Invitational, held Friday-Saturday, Nov. 7-8, in Chicago, Ill. He also was a member of four first-place relay squads at the Maroon Invitational, as the Bears tallied 1,004.5 team points in the win.

Beyer’s best time in the meet came in the 400-yard individual medley, which he won in 4:07.52, eclipsing the NCAA championship “B” qualifying standards, becoming the first Bear to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships this year. He also won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.29) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.40), missing the provisional standard in the 200-free by just 0.55 seconds.

Beyer teamed with freshman Billy Griffits, senior Julian Beattie and sophomore David Chao in the 400-medley relay (3:34.97), Chao, sophomore Kartik Anjur and junior Brian Kushner in the 800-free relay (7:03.55) and senior Kevin Leckey, junior Dan Arteaga and Chao in the 400-free relay (3:09.40). He also won the 200-medley relay (1:38.50) with Leckey, Arteaga and Chao.

The Washington University men’s and women’s swim teams will be back in action in two weeks when they host the WU Thanksgiving Invitational, Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 22-23, at the Millstone Pool in St. Louis, Mo.
