Swimming & Diving Teams Fall at Southern Illinois University
Carbondale, Ill., October 30, 2009 - The Washington University in St. Louis men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were both defeated by NCAA Division I Southern Illinois University on Friday, Oct. 30, in Carbondale, Ill. The WU men lost 140-90, while the women’s team lost 153-65.
Washington University men’s All-Americans Alex Beyer and David Chao turned in a pair of the fastest times for either squad on Friday. Chao was the only individual event winner for Washington U., taking first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.40, just 0.95 shy of the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying standard.
Beyer was the runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley, submitting a mark of 1:56.68, which falls 1.49 shy of the NCAA provisional qualifying time. Beyer also came in second in the 500-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 4:44.62, and he was a member of the Bears’ third-place 200-medley relay team, along with sophomore Billy Griffitts, senior Dan Arteaga and Chao. The foursome finished the relay in 1:37.25.
Other top finishers for the WU men included freshman Mark Minowitz’ third-place showing in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:46.38), junior Kartik Anjur’s second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (56.33) and senior Dima Galkin’s runner-up performance in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.41).
For the Washington U. women’s team, senior Jessie Lodewyk came in third place in the 200-yard freestyle with a team season-best time of 2:00.30. Freshman Veronica Tse was the runner-up in the women’s 100-yard freestyle, submitting a mark of 56.35, and sophomore Karina Stridh came in second in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 1:03.68.
Washington U. returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 31, when it will host DePauw University for a dual meet at the Millstone Pool in St. Louis, Mo., at 1 p.m. |
