Women's Swimming Fifth, Men Seventh, at Show-Me Showdown
Columbia, Mo., October 10, 2009 - The Washington University in St. Louis women’s swimming and diving team came in fifth place out of seven schools and the men’s team was seventh out of seven at the University of Missouri Show-Me Showdown swim meet on Saturday, Oct. 10, in Columbia, Mo. The early season meet showcases collegiate swimming programs from the state of Missouri at all three NCAA Divisions in addition to the NAIA.
Sophomore Karina Stridh submitted two of the Washington University women’s team’s fastest individual swims on Saturday, and she was also a member of a fifth-place 200-freestyle relay team. She placed 11th in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.14, and she came in 13th in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing the sprint in 25.76.
Stridh partnered with junior Claire Henderson, senior Johanna Vander Linde and freshman Veronica Tse to submit a time of 1:42.54 in the 200-free relay.
Sophomore Catherine Rafferty-Millett placed 11th in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 1:02.94, and she teamed with Tse, sophomore Amy Vanlishout and freshman Meghan Powers to grab a fourth-place finish in the 400-freestyle relay (3:45.36). Senior Jessie Lodewyk had the WU women’s highest individual finish in any race with a seventh-place showing in the 500-yard freestyle, with a time of 5:23.71.
For the Washington University men’s team, seniors Alex Beyer and Dan Arteaga submitted several strong swims. Arteaga posted a season-best time of 21.74 in the 50-yard freestyle, which was good for a seventh-place finish, and he came in sixth in the 50-yard butterfly, with a time of 23.75.
Beyer came in eighth in the 50-yard breaststroke, finishing in 27.71, and his time of 4:50.18 in the 500-yard freestyle was good for a 10th-place overall finish.
Other fast time for Washington U. came from junior Kartik Anjur, who placed 10th in the 100-yard butterfly (53.29) and senior Dima Galkin, who was 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.45).
The Washington University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 30, when they head to Carbondale, Ill., to face Southern Illinois University in a dual meet beginning at 5 p.m. |
