WU Volleyball and Sandy Pomerantz To Be Honored
St. Louis, Mo., January 3, 2008 – 1963 Washington University graduate Sanford “Sandy” Pomerantz will be inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame on Feb. 10, 2008, at the University Plaza Convention Center in Springfield, Mo.
Pomerantz, a 1994 inductee into the Washington University Sports Hall of Fame, is regarded as one of the best basketball players in Washington University history. He earned All-America honors with the Bears after beginning his collegiate career at national power Cincinnati. After transferring to WU at the semester break of his sophomore season, Pomerantz averaged 24.9 points per game in his eight games with the Bears.
Pomerantz missed his junior season with an injury before scoring a single-season school record 580 points (22.3 ppg) in 1962-63. Named the conference MVP, he led the Bears to an 18-8 record and a berth in the NCAA tournament. Pomerantz scored a career-high 41 points in a victory over Valparaiso University.
He also played on the United States basketball and volleyball teams at the 1961 and 1965 Maccabiah Games in Israel, bringing home a gold medal for basketball and bronze medal in volleyball.
In addition, the 2007 Washington University volleyball team will receive The Missouri Sports Achievement Award during the ceremony. The Bears won the NCAA Division III National Championship on Nov. 17 in Bloomington, Ill. The title for Washington U. was its Division III-record ninth in school history.
