Lynn Imergoot Passes Away at Age 60 in New York

St. Louis, Mo., July 26, 2009
– Washington University in St. Louis associate director of intramurals and club sports and former women’s tennis coach Lynn Imergoot passed away on Friday, July 24, from injuries sustained in a car accident in New York. Imergoot, 60, retired from coaching in 2005 and spent a total of 37 years on the Danforth Campus.

A five-time University Athletic Association (UAA) Coach of the Year, Imergoot built the Bears' program from ground level to a national contender. In 30 seasons (1975-2005) as head coach of the Bears, she tabulated a career record of 435-164 (.726). Imergoot, the first head coach in the program's history, guided Washington University to seven NCAA Division Tournament appearances.

In addition to her tennis duties, Imergoot served as director of women's and co-ed intramurals from 1973-79, coordinator of women's athletics from 1977-84, and as assistant athletic director from 1984-2005.

"Lynn was a leader in building women's athletics," said Washington University Director of Athletics John Schael. "She not only coached great teams, she helped pave the way for women to excel in sports through her example and her determination."

A service will take place on Monday, July 27, at Noon, at the Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel in Livingston, N.J. She will be buried at Floral Parks Cemetery in Deans, N.J. For more information, please call the funeral chapel at (973) 422-0600.
