Former Washington U. AD Dick Martin Passes Away at Age 75

St. Louis, Mo., March 10, 2008Former Washington University Director of Athletics and head football coach Dick Martin passed away on Saturday, March 9, at the University of Kansas Medical Center after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Martin arrived at Washington University in 1968, where he served as the school’s head football coach and athletic director for four years. He led the WU football team to an overall record of 13-24 in four seasons as head coach, and the Bears were co-champions of the College Athletic Conference in 1970.

After leaving Washington U., Martin became the assistant commissioner of the Big Eight Conference in Kansas City, Mo., and he moved to Morgantown, W. Va., in 1979, where he was named the athletic director at West Virginia University. Martin also served as the commissioner of the Missouri Valley Conference from 1981-1985, and as the executive director of the University of Missouri-Kansas City Athletic Foundation from 1990-1998.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Martin.
