Having made 18 NCAA Tournament appearances, the
Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer program is one of the nation's most storied.
Since the inception of the Division III tournament in 1974,
the Bears have finished
as national runners-up three times (1978, 1985, 1987). The
Bears have also posted a 27-18-4 NCAA Tournament record (.592).
Washington U. sports an all-time record of 475-229-74 through
the completion of the 2007 season, good for a winning percentage
of .658. Head coach Joe Carenza began the program in 1959
and guided it for five years before watching his son Joe Carenza,
Sr. take over the program later in 1974. After 158 wins, current
ABC soccer commentator Ty Keough took the reins and success
continued with a 136-47-17 mark.
In 1997, former Saint Louis University All-American Joe Clarke
assumed the head coaching duties and immediately made his
impact felt. In his first season, Clarke guided Washington
U. to a 14-6 record and the regional finals of the NCAA Tournament.
In 11 seasons under his watch, the Bears have posted a
127-62-22 (.654) mark; Clarke has also led the Red and Green to five NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip in 2007. The 2007 campaign was the most successful of Clarke's tenure at Washington U. The Bears won 16 games and advanced to the NCAA Sectional Finals.
Washington has captured six University Athletic Association
titles. The Bears, who made three consecutive NCAA Tournament
appearances Clarke's first three seasons,
haven't had a losing season in the past 23 years. Since the program
began, six student-athletes have earned 11 All-America citations.
