Tim Whittle returned to his alma mater in 2004, and has served as the top assistant for Mark Edwards the past four seasons. Whittle, a 1996 graduate from Washington Universiy with a degree in business administration, serves as recruiting coordinator and focuses on Bears’ post-play and on-court coaching.
Whittle and the Bears won the school's first-ever NCAA Division III National Championship in 2008, defeating Amherst College, 90-68, in Salem Va. The Bears finished the season with a 25-6 overall record, and placed second in the University Athletic Association (UAA).
In four seasons at Washington University, Whittle has helped guide the Bears to a 84-27 (.757) overall record. In 2006-07, WU tied the school record for most wins in a season with a 25-5 overall record, and made the school’s first-ever trip to the Final Four.
Whittle arrived on the Danforth Campus after serving as the assistant men’s basketball coach and head men’s golf coach for three years at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn. While at Sewanee, Whittle coached 10 Academic All-Southern Athletic Conference members and four all-SCAC selections.
Prior to joining the Sewanee staff, Whittle worked for Major League Baseball’s Florida Marlins as manager of finance, coordinating efforts to help try to fund a $400 million ballpark in downtown Miami.
Whittle played four years under current head coach Mark Edwards from 1992-96, and helped lead the Bears to a four-year record of 79-27, two University Athletic Association (UAA) titles and two trips to the NCAA Tournament.
As a senior, Whittle started 27 of 28 games and averaged eight points and three rebounds per game as he helped lead the Bears to the Elite Eight for the second time in school history. He also received the Robert L. Pearce Award in 1996, given annually to a player who best exemplifies and demonstrates hard work, 110 percent effort and commitment to team play.
