Jay Murry, a familiar voice on the Washington University in St. Louis scene, returns for his ninth season as the voice of the Bears.

Murry, a three-time NSMA Missouri Sportscaster of the Year, is in his second stint as the voice of the Bears after doing some work behind the microphone in the 1990s. 

He has handled play-by-play duties for the football and men’s and women’s basketball teams since 2009, and is in his fourth year doing PBP for men’s and women’s soccer, baseball and softball. Murry has also called the action for select swimming and diving and track and field home meets.

Throughout his tenure at WashU, Murry has provided the call for over 400 Bears games. Prior to his return to the Danforth Campus, Murry served for 14 years as the news and sports director of KWRE-AM/KFAV-FM in Warrenton, Mo., where he received broadcasting honors from the Missouri Associated Press and the Missouri Broadcasters Association.

Murry received Bachelor of Arts degrees in speech and dramatic art and psychology from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1986, and then picked up his Master of Science degree in mass communication in 1995 from Lindenwood University.  

He serves as a special education paraprofessional at Fort Zumwalt West High School in O’Fallon, Missouri. Murry and his wife, Cathy, have three children: Jason (26), Shelly (17) and Mitchell (15).  They reside in St. Charles, Mo.
