St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 18, 2019 – Washington University in St. Louis had three student-athletes named University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for their respective sports, as announced by the Association Monday.
Sophomore Gabbie Cesarone of the No. 3-ranked women's soccer team, senior Paige Lawler of the No. 2 women's cross-country team and freshman Chris Vartanian of the football team each earned the honor.
In addition, Vartanian was named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Special Teams Player of the Week.
Gabbie Cesarone – Women's Soccer
Cesarone anchored the defense to a pair of shutout wins at home as WashU advanced to the Sweet 16 for the eighth time in the last nine years. The Bears limited Maryville (Tenn.) to four shots on goal in 4-0 victory Saturday in the First Round, and then held Adrian to one shot on goal in a 2-0 win Sunday in the Second Round. Cesarone also scored the game-winner against Adrian in the 35th minute.
Paige Lawler – Women's Cross Country
Lawler won the 2019 NCAA Midwest Regional on Saturday with a time of 21:53.0, a full 20 seconds ahead of second place. The Bears won the event, netting only 37 points with all five competitors finishing within the top 13 places for their second-straight and 10th Midwest Regional title.
Chris Vartanian – Football
Vartanian connected on a pair of field goals and made all six of his extra points in the Bears' 62-14 win at Carroll on Saturday. Vartanian's season-long 47-yard field goal put WashU up 20-0 in the second quarter.
