Three Bears Recognized in Initial UAA Weekly Honors

St. Louis, Mo., September 3, 2019 – Three Washington University in St. Louis student-athletes were recognized in the initial University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week honors for the 2019-20 season.

Freshman Annie Mascot of the No. 9-ranked women's golf program, senior middle hitter Leila King of the No. 14-ranked volleyball program and sophomore back Gabbie Cesarone of the No. 3-ranked women's soccer team were the Bears honored.

Mascot shot a three-over 75 to earn co-medalist honors as WashU opened the 2019-20 season with a 15-shot victory over NAIA William Woods University at the I-70 Dual Saturday at Meadow Lake Acres Country Club in New Bloomfield, Mo.

King had a dominant weekend totaling 45 kills, 19 blocks and 15 digs in four matches. She reset her single match personal-best kill total twice over the weekend when she tallied 16 kills against Hendrix before closing out the Bear Invitational with 17 against Cornell. In both contests the Atlanta, Ga.-native posted a hitting percentage well above .400 en route to a .440 mark to start the year. In addition, King reached double figures in blocks in a five set match to North Park when she recorded three solo and seven block assists.

Cesarone anchored the back line which posted a pair of shutouts on the road to open the 2019 season. Cesarone and the WashU defense limited Calvin to three shots on goal in a 3-0 win Friday in Grand Rapids, Mich., and then the Bears held No. 15 Hope to two shots on frame in a 0-0 double overtime draw Saturday in Holland, Mich. Cesarone also scored the game-winner in the victory at Calvin, the first goal of her career.
