St. Louis, Mo., Dec. 3, 2018 – Washington University in St. Louis had three student-athletes recognized as the University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week, as announced Monday by the Association.
Senior midfielder Caroline Dempsey of the women's soccer team, sophomore Eka Jose of the women's indoor track and field team and sophomore John Harry Wagner of the men's indoor track and field team each earned the honor.
Dempsey, the Defensive Athlete of the Week, was part of the defense that limited No. 3 Middlebury to a season-low three shots and one corner kick in a 1-0 loss in the 2018 NCAA Division III Semifinals Friday in Greensboro, N.C.
Jose broke a school record that stood since 2003 by reaching a distance of 12.29m in the triple jump at the Titan First Chance Meet in Bloomington, Ill. She leapt more than three-quarters of a meter further than the runner-up in the event that included Division I athletes. Jose also posted the second-best long jump in school-history, placing second overall by reaching 5.68m.
Wagner took first place in the 600m run during the Titan First Chance meet to open the 2018-19 Indoor Track & Field season. He placed first by more than a second ahead of the runner-up with a winning time of 1:22.03. Wagner was also a member of the Bears second place finishing 4x400m relay team that posted the top Division III time among the field of competition, 3:23.62.
