St. Louis, Mo., Jan. 29, 2018 — Washington University in St. Louis had a pair of student-athletes honored as the University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week, as announced by the Association on Monday.
Junior pole vaulter Heidi Nassos of the No. 12-ranked women's indoor track & field team and senior center David Schmelter of the No. 2 men's basketball team earned the honor.
Nassos placed first in the pole vault at Illinois Wesleyan University's Titan Open Saturday to help the Bears place first overall as she cleared a distance of 3.75m. That mark ranks third in NCAA Division III. Nassos earned the indoor honor for the second time this season and fifth in her career.
Schmelter averaged 13 points, 15 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game as WashU posted a pair of top-25 road wins last week. He had 11 points, 15 rebounds and two blocks in the 77-62 win at No. 22 Rochester Friday, and followed that up with 15 points and 15 rebounds in an 84-67 victory at No. 13 Emory Sunday. Schmelter shot 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from the field and hit 6-of-8 from the free-throw line in the two victories. He earned the honor for the first time in his career.
