St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 20, 2017 — Washington University in St. Louis had a pair of student-athletes honored as the University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week, as announced by the Association on Monday.
Senior guard Kevin Kucera of the No. 9-ranked men's basketball team and senior David O'Gara of the No. 5 men's cross country team each earned the honor.
Kucera was named the Robert L. Burnes Most Valuable Player of the 34th Annual Lopata Classic after leading WashU to a pair of victories at home. Kucera averaged 20.0 points, 9.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game in the two wins. He had 19 points and nine assists in an 82-70 win over Wabash Friday, and then had a double-double with 21 points and 10 assists in a 98-94 victory over No. 6 Tufts in the championship game Saturday.
Kucera, who earned the honor for the first time in his career, shot 51.9 percent (14-27) from the field and hit 8-of-10 from the free-throw line.
O'Gara earned his second career All-America honor by placing ninth overall at the 2017 NCAA Division III Cross Country National Championship 8K race in Elsah, Ill. He finished the rain soaked course in 24:36.50, which was his best performance in three times racing at nationals. O'Gara ran his fastest mile during the last leg of the race, 4:42.37, which helped keep him on track for his top-10 finish.
O'Gara earned the honor for the sixth time this year and seventh in his career.
